In 2012, Dorset County Council decided that nine small libraries in Dorset, including Charmouth’s, would be closed unless taken over by the community.   One has closed (Portland Underhill) but the remaining eight are now community-managed.

-> New post on leather business bags 2018.

Charmouth has the freehold to the library building and renamed its library CHARMOUTH CENTRAL to demonstrate its new role, not just as a library with longer opening hours, but as a community hub.   DCC will continue to supply books, a library management system and some professional help.

-> New post on choosing student accommodation

All running costs and staffing are the responsibility of volunteers, under the banner of Friends of Charmouth Library (to join:  click on Come on In).

-> 11 Plus Exam Preparation.

To enable more social activities and an income source, Charmouth Central was awarded a grant by the Big Lottery Fund for an extension to house a servery and retail area.

-> Weatherproof garden furniture 2016

Other funders are:  Dorset Community Foundation, West Dorset District Council, Charmouth Traders’ Association, Charmouth Parish Council and local donors.
